Sedation
Sedation dentistry helps patients feel calm, comfortable, and at ease during dental procedures. It’s especially useful for those who experience dental anxiety, have a sensitive gag reflex, need extensive treatment, or simply prefer a more relaxed experience. There are several levels and types of sedation, tailored to your needs:
Oral Sedation
This involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment. It produces a deeper sense of relaxation than nitrous oxide. You’ll remain awake but may feel drowsy and may not remember much of the procedure. Because the effects last longer, you’ll need someone to drive you home.
IV Sedation
Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation allows for a deeper level of relaxation. Your dentist can adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure. While you are not fully unconscious, many patients feel as if they slept through their treatment.
General Anesthesia
In some cases, especially for complex procedures or patients with special needs, general anesthesia may be used. This renders you fully asleep during the procedure and is typically performed in a specialized setting.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Yes—when administered by trained professionals, sedation dentistry is safe and effective. Your medical history, current medications, and individual needs are carefully reviewed beforehand to ensure the best and safest option for you.
What to Expect
Before your procedure, your dentist will explain your sedation options and provide instructions on how to prepare.
During treatment, your vital signs are closely monitored.
Afterward, you may feel groggy depending on the type of sedation used, and recovery instructions will be provided.
